New Balance

When talking about the recent rise of New Balance, two names almost always come up: Teddy Santis and Joe Freshgoods. And while the first is about the new wave of preparedness (now a tsunami, surely?), the second, an African-American born designer Joseph Robinson, has elevated the Boston-based sportswear brand using it as a platform. -shape to explore important themes, trigger needed speeches, and amplify often overlooked voices.

Since its inception, Joe Freshgoods x New Balance has been steeped in black culture; the designer’s first-hand experiences of life in West Side Chicago inform each of his designs. Already, the born storyteller has shared memories of being part of a tight-knit community in a black neighborhood (“Outside Clothes”) and growing up in a black home (“Inside Voices”) via collaboration—memories that trigger the nostalgia in some and curiosity in others.

And thanks to “Conversations Amongst Us” — his continuing line with New Balance launched earlier this year — the multi-hyphenate has found more tangible ways to support the black community. Namely, working closely with Black Soles, New Balance’s group of all-black employees made up of the likes of Kevin Trotman and Jordan Johnson, and bringing the activewear brand together with Community Goods, its nonprofit organization. nonprofit that aims to bridge the arts education gap for youth in inner city neighborhoods including Chicago and Austin.

So if you’re looking to invest in a pair of New Balance sneakers, why not support the Black community by choosing a pair designed by Joe Freshgoods or his ‘Conversations Amongst Us’ project? Not only do they feel good, but they also look good. I can’t ask for more than that.
